JANUARYASIA BUSINESS OUTLOOK9· Sylvan Group and SK Innovation commit US$300M to hydrogen mobility· Plan includes 29 refueling hubs and 6,000+ hydrogen buses by 2029· Supply, policy risk, and infrastructure tech will shape executionChinese AI startup Zhipu AI and ride-hailing giant Didi have announced a strategic partnership focused on advancing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and agent-based applications for the mobility sector in China. The collaboration aims to deploy intelligent agents in complex mobility scenarios, enhancing user intent understanding, reasoning capabilities, and decision-making across transportation use cases. The companies said they will work together to develop AI-powered mobility assistants, including potential business travel and corporate mobility agents, combining Didi's large-scale operational mobility data with Zhipu AI's large language model (LLM) expertise. They also plan to jointly train talent in LLMs and explore new commercial and research-driven AI applications. However, key details remain undisclosed. The announcement does not clarify data-sharing arrangements, leaving it uncertain whether Zhipu AI will be able to fine-tune models using Didi's proprietary ride-hailing data--often seen as a potential competitive moat. There is also no visibility into pilot scope, rollout timelines, revenue-sharing mechanisms, or target adoption metrics, making it unclear whether the partnership is focused on near-term commercialization or early-stage research aligned with Zhipu's Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform approach. The partnership reflects a broader trend among Chinese AI startups, which increasingly prioritize practical commercialization over purely theoretical AGI work.If Didi launches AI-driven business travel assistants, opportunities could emerge for independent software vendors (ISVs) to build tools for expense management, compliance, and payment reconciliation.Didi already integrates with SAP Concur's App Center, hinting at enterprise ecosystem extensions. From an infrastructure perspective, investors and SaaS providers may watch for new layers such as agent monitoring, safety, and regulatory compliance tools. With Didi having opened APIs and formed over 1,000 partnerships, similar integrations -- like its Mexico OXXO cash top-up model--could be replicated in other markets, creating further opportunities before Didi builds proprietary solutions. The Sylvan Group, a Singapore-based private equity firm backed by members of the Hyundai family, has partnered with SK Innovation to invest approximately US$300 million in South Korea's hydrogen mobility sector. The investment will be deployed through SK Hyverse, a hydrogen mobility platform, to accelerate the build-out of 29 liquefied hydrogen refueling hubs and support the operation of more than 6,000 hydrogen-powered buses by 2029.SK Innovation, the energy arm of SK Group, will secure hydrogen supplies through long-term sourcing from its existing liquefied hydrogen production facilities in Incheon. One of its group companies, SK E&S, already operates a plant in Incheon with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes of liquefied hydrogen, sufficient to fuel around 5,000 buses.Since the plan targets over 6,000 buses, SK Hyverse will require multi-year offtake agreements and additional supply arrangements to meet future demand. The investment comes amid policy uncertainty. South Korea cancelled its 2025 clean hydrogen power tender, and the 2024 round achieved only 750 GWh per year against a 6.5 TWh target, raising concerns around long-term demand visibility and subsidy risks, especially as coal power is phased out by 2040.Operationally, running 29 hydrogen refueling hubs will require station monitoring software, IoT-based safety sensors, real-time payment systems, and strong cybersecurity for operational technology (OT).Agencies such as the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and Korea Gas Technology Corporation already issue related tenders, creating opportunities for technology, infrastructure, and security providers as South Korea scales its hydrogen ecosystem.
