There’s a quiet complexity that defines the world of neurosurgery; an arena where skill, timing, and courage converge every single day. At the backstage of all the procedures is not only the mastery of technique, but a profound knowledge of the human brain, its strength, and weakness. India has made incredible advances in this area contributed by physicians that have pushed limits of precision and compassion equally.
Transitioning from the corridors of AIIMS New Delhi to establishing advanced neurosurgical care in Jaipur, Dr Anil Kothiwala has emerged as one such name. His career is a demonstration of commitment, creativity, and pursuit of excellence. He is a graduate of AIIMS and his road to neurosurgery was inspired by his mentors and the pioneer spirit in the institute. His early inclinations led him to cardiac or transplant surgery but eventually discovered his vocation in neurosurgery, a domain that he claims to be both complex and highly rewarding.
Turning Challenges into Breakthroughs in Neurosurgical Care
Today, Dr Kothiwala provides holistic surgical care for conditions affecting the brain, spine, and nervous system. His practice includes cases such as brain tumors, hemorrhages, strokes, epilepsy, spinal injuries, fractures and degenerative disorders. His work is distinguished by a patient-driven approach, that is, every case is treated with accuracy, empathy, and an emphasis on the best possible results. Whenever possible, minimal invasive methods are employed to guarantee a quicker recovery and a higher level of comfort.
His specialization includes vascular neurosurgery, cerebrovascular procedures, skull base and complicated brain tumors, as well as complex spine surgeries.
He has also brought new and modern methods, which are not commonly used due to complexity and cost issues in India like the concept of an indigenous cost-effective suction pump device used for retrograde suction aspiration of intracranial giant aneurysms and the concept of minimally invasive membranotomy in subdural hematomas operation to enhance surgical safety, success rate without increasing the cost burden of operation.
These innovations underscore his determination of introducing the world's best practices to the Indian operating rooms.
He identifies himself as an all-rounder in neurosurgery and believes in providing holistic care instead of specializing in a single subspecialty.
One of his most memorable cases is that of a farmer lady with giant intracranial aneurysm, who was refused treatment elsewhere because of high risk. Dr Kothiwala and his team used the innovative method of retrograde suction aspiration to clip reconstruct the aneurysm, thus saving the life of patient. Although the procedure was internationally described, it was not widely attempted in India. For him, this case once again validated the strength of innovation, preparation, and collaboration.
In spite of these accomplishments, he is conscious of the larger issues that neurosurgeons struggle with in India. Patients present themselves when the disease is in its later stages and this limits the recovery. His emphasis is on the importance of being more aware of the significance of early diagnosis and early intervention. The other issue is infrastructure-neurosurgery requires sophisticated equipment, intensive care unit and qualified manpower.
“It’s a team sport”, he says, and emphasizes the fact that success relies on the smooth integration of professionals who share a common objective. “Creating and maintaining such a team in a private system necessitates constant balance between quality care and affordability”, Dr Anil notes.
A Commitment to Healing & Humanity
His works have earned him a few awards over the years, including best paper and poster presentation Award during MCH at AIIMS and an award in the Young Neurosurgeons Conference. “But the ultimate reward for me is patient satisfaction, the smiles I see daily in my clinic are better than certificates or trophies”, he says.
Going forward, Dr Anil envisions an India where world-class neurosurgical care is available across cities and towns. He is confident that with the right equipment and skills, more than 90 percent of cases can bring positive results; evidence of the level that the field has developed.
Neurosurgery is not just a profession for me; it is a privilege, a chance to help people at their most vulnerable
After completing his training at AIIMS, he established a high standard of care in Jaipur. Although it was a challenge but he embraced it wholeheartedly. Today, he offers a complete spectrum of neurosurgical operations including, transnasal pituitary and endovascular coiling, brachial plexus, brain tumor, and complex spine surgery with a steady success rate.
To Dr Anil, neurosurgery is not just a profession, but a privilege, a chance to help people at their most vulnerable. His vision for the future is clear, and that is to enhance awareness, access and excellence in neurosurgical care throughout India so that all patients can enjoy treatment rooted in safety, skill and compassion.
Dr Anil Kothiwala, Neurosurgeon
Dr Anil Kothiwala is a successful neurosurgeon who has an MBBS and MCh degree in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. His areas of expertise are vascular neurosurgery, skull-base tumors, and complex spine surgery, and are credited for innovation of indigenous cost effective device used for retrograde suction aspiration of intracranial Giant brain aneurysms treatment and a minimally invasive membranotomy step in SDH surgery to reduce recurrence with enhanced success rates in india.
Operating from NHBH hospital, NIMS university Jaipur, his patient centric practice combines cutting edge interventions and high satisfaction and multidisciplinary teamwork, reflecting his belief in neurosurgery as both science and service.
