BYD unveiled a new platform for electric vehicles (EVs) that it said could charge EVs as quickly as it takes to pump gas and announced for the first time that it would build a charging network across China.
At a live-streamed ceremony from the company's Shenzhen offices, creator Wang Chuanfu stated that the so-called "super e-platform" will have a 1,000 kW peak charging speed, allowing automobiles to drive 400 km on a 5-minute charge.
The 1,000kW charging rate would be twice as quick as the 500kW charging speeds offered by Tesla's most recent superchargers. Since fast-charging technology is thought to allay EV drivers' worries about how quickly their vehicles can be charged, it has been crucial in boosting EV adoption.
"In order to completely solve our user's charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refuelling time of petrol vehicles," Wang said.
BYD stated that it would construct more than 4,000 ultra-fast charging heaps, or units, throughout China to accommodate the new platform. The new charging architecture would be initially offered in two new EVs, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, with prices starting at 270,000 yuan (US$37,330).
The corporation didn't say how long it would take or how much it would cost to create these facilities. Up until now, BYD owners have mostly relied on public charging stations operated by outside operators or the charging stations of other automakers.
