Sea Limited, a technology company, opened its new digital financial services headquarters in Singapore on Thursday (May 8).
The company operates digital financial platforms such as mobile wallets, payment processing, and banking. On Thursday, it was rebranded as Monee after previously being known as SeaMoney.
The office at Rochester Commons, which is a six-minute walk from Buona Vista MRT, has ten floors and over 200,000 square feet, including an auditorium on the ninth floor.
The headquarters will initially house over 1,000 digital finance professionals, with a capacity of up to 1,500 employees.
More than 100 meeting rooms and "product innovation spaces" are available, as well as a cafe and a gym with approximately 20 types of fitness equipment.
There will also be centers of excellence for product management, artificial intelligence, and anti-money laundering.
'Sea was founded in May 2009 by Mr. Forrest Li, the company's CEO and chairman.
Sea, which was previously known as Garena, now owns Shopee, an e-commerce platform, and MariBank, one of Singapore's five digital banks.
"We chose the name Monee because it is simple, cute, and just like Sea, easy to write and pronounce," says Mr. Li.
"By having the same sound as'money,' its name immediately connects to what the business is about," he said, adding that Monee aims to improve the lives of consumers and small businesses through financial technology.
Manpower Minister Tan See Leng attended the opening of Monee's office, which also marked Sea's 16th anniversary.
He described the opening of the new office as a significant milestone for the company, which has evolved from a gaming start-up to a "regional technology powerhouse".
These businesses boost Singapore's standing as a center for talent, ideas, and investment while opening up new doors for the populace and economy.
"It is even more crucial that Singapore continues to support anchor businesses like Sea as we anticipate a new global economic order," he stated.
