Every wall, ceiling, and floor tells a story of how materials meet human ambition. However, despite the increased height and density of the cities, the construction industry tends to stick to the traditional techniques. Hence, this leaves some of the most common issues such as leaks, condensation, and molds unaddressed.
In Southeast Asia, billions are being spent on construction every year, yet there are not many ways to yield solutions that are durable, efficient, and sustainable. It is in this gap where scientific insight has the potential to reshape the way buildings are designed and maintained.
From this intersection of need and opportunity, Nano- Star emerged. The firm was Co-Founded by Isaac Ong, a materials science graduate from the National University of Singapore. He co-founded Nano-Star together with his father, an experienced architect.
Isaac saw that nanotechnology, which is already proving useful in other sectors, was practically nonexistent in the construction sector. His father had years of practical experience in building design and construction.
They both went on to come up with smarter, stronger, and cleaner solutions, combining technical innovation and practice. This collaboration laid the foundation for Nano-Star and its mission to improve construction from the inside out.
Aligning Material Science With Real-World Needs
Isaac Ong, Director at Nano-Star, says, “We at Nano-Star have three guiding principles which are: stronger, faster, and cleaner. ‘Stronger’ deals with longevity and lifecycle of our products and solutions.
‘Faster’ guarantees greater efficiency in the field, shorter working hours, and facilitates operations. ‘Cleaner’ focuses on sustainability, reducing wastage and enhancing eco-friendly practices.” These values are incorporated in all of Nano-Star’s projects and products, ensuring that innovation is always made practical.
In addition to the creation of construction products, the firm also functions as a consultancy. It works closely with architects, engineers, and project consultants where each project is thoroughly analyzed. Solutions are then recommended according to each project’s specific needs and requirements.
This approach ensures that Nano-Star’s solution is tailored to the project, avoiding generic, one-size-fits-all fixes. Through technical experience and project-specific knowledge, Nano-Star has gained the trust of both government agencies and private stakeholders.
Isaac notes that, “Our product range is focused and highly specialized.” The NSC Nano-Waterproofer, a water-based spray, fixes leaks without removing or hacking tiles. Non-film forming and lab-tested for over eight years, it is listed under the Singapore Housing Development Board (HDB) materials list and approved for government projects.
TMJ Anti-Condensation Paint addresses condensation on cold walls in a single coat. Its insulative microcrystals reduce thermal bridging and prevent mold, solving a persistent problem in humid climates. Both products reflect the firm’s philosophy: solutions that are scientifically sound, technically precise, and practically effective.

Building Trust in a Conservative Industry
Nano-Star faces one of the largest barriers of convincing a conservative construction industry to embrace new technologies. Innovations are frequently doubted by professionals in the field, particularly in an industry where errors can be expensive.
To address this, the firm invests in education and dialogue, presenting lab data and long-term project results dating back to 2015. By showing consistent, measurable performance, Nano- Star reassures clients that its solutions are reliable and built for the long term.
The firm thrives on the partnership between architecture and materials science. Architectural insight ensures solutions are relevant and practical, while scientific expertise guarantees durability and performance. This collaboration allows Nano-Star to develop systems that last rather than just products that sell.
Over the years, word-of-mouth referrals among building professionals and invitations to share expertise with government agencies have strengthened its reputation. The journey from early trials to national recognition reflects patience, rigor, and commitment.
Building Presence Across the Region
Looking ahead, Nano-Star aims to become a leader in the construction materials sector. The firm continues to expand across Southeast Asia, with distributors already in Indonesia and Malaysia, and plans for Thailand and the Philippines. Its focus remains unchanged: creating solutions that are stronger, faster, and cleaner, balancing innovation with reliability.
From pioneering nano waterproofing in government projects to educating an entire industry, Nano-Star’s journey demonstrates that meaningful innovation comes from dedication, collaboration, and the careful application of science to everyday challenges.
