At Computex 2025, MediaTek announced a significant milestone in semiconductor development: the company will tape out its first 2-nanometer chip in September. The announcement positions MediaTek as a leader in next-generation high-performance, low-power chipsets and marks a significant advancement over existing 3nm technology.
Key Highlights
In his address during the keynote, MediaTek's Vice Chairman and CEO Rick Tsai announced the upcoming chip and noted that it will be a "high-volume" custom ASIC designed for uses beyond only smartphones. Experts believe that, thanks to TSMC, the chip should perform 15% better and consume 25% less energy compared to the one it replaces.
The 2nm chipset centers around artificial intelligence and is chipable for advanced machine learning and real-time inference. This design will allow devices to support autonomous driving, quick language translation and smarter ways to talk to them and it will also make the battery last longer and use less energy, according to MediaTek.
As part of its AI-driven roadmap, MediaTek announced that it is collaborating with developers on nearly 250 AI models, including Gemini, DeepSeek, and LLaMA. In addition, over 100 Internet of Things (IoT) models are in the works, indicating the company's expanding ambitions in the industrial, enterprise, and consumer sectors.
To Tsai, AI is vital to the development of 6G and MediaTek is set to take a leading role in making 6G technology available.
Coming on the heels of its 2nm chip launch, MediaTek is active in creating both new semiconductor solutions and preparing for a world driven by AI and 6G connectivity.
