India has taken a significant step toward strengthening its polar and oceanic research capabilities with the construction of its first indigenous Polar Research Vessel (PRV). The milestone follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Norwegian technology firm Kongsberg.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal hailed the initiative as a major boost to the “Make in India” campaign and a testament to India’s commitment to sustainable development and international collaboration. “This project is not just about science; it's about building a legacy of innovation, exploration, and cooperation,” he said.
The PRV, to be constructed at GRSE’s Kolkata facility, will be equipped with advanced technology for deep-sea exploration, marine ecosystem research, and climate studies. It will be operated by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and support India’s missions in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
Kongsberg will contribute its design expertise to ensure the vessel meets the highest international standards. The collaboration aligns with the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ vision to expand India's footprint in polar research and oceanography.
During his visit to Norway, Minister Sonowal also joined a high-level maritime summit, emphasizing India’s drive toward a green and sustainable maritime sector. He noted that Indian shipyards currently hold 11% of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association’s order book and highlighted opportunities under India’s Sagarmala program and the $2.9 billion Maritime Development Fund.
This initiative marks a new era in India’s scientific and maritime ambitions.
