Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) will be acquiring shares of DEScycle Ltd., A UK company developing innovative metal recycling technology. Both companies have entered into a strategic business partnership to support this collaboration.
DEScycle employs innovative technology of metal recovery from e-scrap. E-scrap is an amalgamation of copper and other precious metals, its value in utilization in urban mines has grown over the years. The invention of AI has also contributed to the increase in the volume of e-scrap, due to rapid expansion in the data centers. This has also raised environmental concerns over the sustainable challenges regarding the e-scrap.
But with DEScycle’s technology, one can selectively melt the metals at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. This helps in the recovery of metals with lower energy consumption, and lesser negative impact on the environment.
MC will be utilizing its trading expertise and industry network to increase the marketing of the metal products made from the DEScycle’s technology. Furthermore, MC will also look into the investment expertise to explore the options of the business with DEScycle. This purpose of the company comes with the aim of contributing to the realization of a circular economy.
Previously DEScycle had raised funds to support its operations. This will be utilized in support of the construction and operation of a pilot plant situated in the UK. This plant will be built with a processing capacity of 5,000 tons. This will be beginning its operations in the UK in 2028. With the success of this plant, it will be extended to North America, Japan, and other regions.
