AT&S Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad has officially begun high-volume manufacturing at its freshly finalized facility in Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah. The site, built in just two years and ready for mass production within a year of completion, stands as a notable success for the company and a revolutionary for Malaysia’s growing semiconductor industry.
The facility will primarily produce high-end integrated circuit (IC) substrates, starting with advanced merchandise for semiconductor mass AMD. Demand is expected to flow, driven by growing markets such as data centers, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). AT&S expects the Kulim plant to attract a broader range of high-profile customers in the coming year.
Kulim plays a vital role in AT&S’s global “substrate triangle,” which links operations in Leoben, Austria; Chongqing, China; and now Malaysia. This network allows the company to share research and development, technical expertise, and manufacturing best practices across continents.
The company has already invested over US $139 million in research and development, and also involved more than 5,000 students through its outreach programs. With a current workforce of 1,500 and substantial cooperation with local academic and research institutions, AT&S is committed to developing local talent.
The total investment in the Kulim campus outlooks states over US $1.2 billion. The first plant spans 255,000 square metres and houses 500 state-of-the-art machines. The site has also been certified by AMD as a "Certified HVM Site," a tribute to its reliability and trustworthiness.
AT&S long-term plan, based in Southeast Asia, has successfully reached the achievement of high-volume manufacturing at the Kulim campus, and becoming a major semiconductor hub under its National Semiconductor Strategy.
