A task force has been formed to assist Singaporeans and local enterprises in capturing opportunities and gaining advantages from the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung made the announcement on March 16 during the launch of an initiative at Woodlands North Plaza, enabling residents to collect vouchers for purchasing everyday essentials for $1.
Though the RTS Link might encourage Singaporeans to cross the Causeway for shopping, it offers Singapore a chance to revitalize several of its retail zones and heartland hubs to “offer something different that Malaysian shoppers will find coming to Singapore also quite interesting”, said Mr Ong, who is an MP for Sembawang GRC.
The task force intends to examine how Singapore can leverage the opportunities and advantages of the RTS Link to revitalize the nation’s heartland. The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) stated on March 16 that it will also explore opportunities for Singapore businesses arising from the enhanced connectivity and travel convenience provided by the rail link.
It will engage with heartland enterprises and local businesses, intending to release its findings and recommendations in 2026, the ministry stated.
By the end of 2026, when it becomes operational, the RTS Link will be able to carry up to 10,000 individuals per hour in each direction between Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North in Singapore.
