Vietjet, a Vietnamese budget airline, announced on Tuesday that it had acquired a strategic stake in Kazakhstan's Qazaq Air, forming a joint venture that will operate a fleet of at least 20 Boeing 737 aircraft.
The joint venture known as Vietjet Qazaqstan represented part of Vietjet's international expansion strategy according to the airline statement. The company refrained from revealing its purchase amount for Qazaq Air.
The statement describes Vietjet Qazaqstan as a new-generation low-cost carrier that will serve as a strategic aviation link between Kazakhstan and Vietnam and Southeast Asia as well as international aviation hubs.
Vietjet and Qazaq Air established a joint venture that partnered with Boeing to provide essential support through software solutions alongside parts delivery as well as technical support and training for pilots and engineers. The partnership enables both airlines to operate more effectively and grow their operational capabilities.
The deal became official through the exchange of documents by Vietjet CEO Dinh Viet Phuong and Qazaq Air CEO Adilbek Umraliyev. Vietjet's ceremonial event featured General Secretary To Lam of Vietnam alongside Deputy Prime Minister Yermek Kosherbayev of Kazakhstan and Bui Thanh Son as Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. — Vietjet
