In East Malaysia, aviation is not a matter of passenger transportation or tourism, but a lifeline. The remote communities of Sarawak and Sabah depend on aircraft in case of emergency medical evacuation, alleviate devastating floods, and to obtain vital supplies during monsoon.
Working here requires much more than technical competence; it requires understanding complex terrain, public service ethos, and the determination to endure the uncertain environment.
Operating in this demanding environment requires not only technical expertise but also an intimate understanding of geography, local culture, and public service obligations.
Answering these challenges with innovation, resilience, and unwavering commitment is Layang Layang Aerospace Sdn. Bhd. (LLA). The company was founded back in April 1994 by Hj. Johan Poong Abdullah in Miri, Sarawak. And over the years, it has created a niche for itself as one of Malaysia’s most versatile aviation service providers.
Started with nothing more than a pair of toolboxes and one technician, the company has grown into a diverse aviation group. It currently comprises more than 180 professionals who operate out of bases in Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Kuching, Sibu, Ipoh and Subang.
Today, LLA is not only associated with providing superior aviation solutions but also getting the remote communities in Malaysia connected to the rest of the country while serving the Southeast Asia market.
Hj. Johan Poong Abdullah, Founder, Layang Layang Aerospace says, “Ever since the establishment of LLA as a maintenance provider, we have been guided by the mission of safety, reliability, flexibility, and excellent services”. With time, market demand and government contracts pushed the company to new vistas of services into charter operations, emergency medical evacuation, aerial surveillance and flight training.
Furthermore, its success can be attributed to both strength of its executive capabilities and national urge of an aviation partner it can trust. With the aviation industry in Malaysia both booming and suffering turbulence in the form of recession, the Asian financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic, LLA held on firmly and enhanced its stature in the eyes of government agencies and the private sectors as a mission-ready operator.
Fleet Versatility & Comprehensive Aviation Solutions
The flexibility of the company can be seen in its fleet. It operates helicopters including the AS355 series, Bell 206, Bolkow 105, and Robinson R44/R66, alongside fixed-wing aircraft such as the Cessna 172, Piper PA-28 and PA-34, Diamond DA42, Nomad N22 and Gamebird GB-1. These varied aircraft enable operations in light charter work and aerial mapping or heavy lift in challenging terrain.
Also to note, its aircraft versatility has also helped it to respond to some of the most challenging humanitarian crises in Malaysia, including flood relief in Pitas in 2021 and in Penampang and Kiulu in 2024. In 2022, LLA was involved in the search and rescue of a missing sailor in North Kudat, which further demonstrates the commitment to life-saving operations.
Adding to this, the company’s strength goes far beyond flight operations. It has grown to become a full spectrum provider of aviation solutions including maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), continuing airworthiness management (CAMO), consultancy and aircraft leasing.
Its maintenance arm is certified as an Approved Maintenance Organization and is further supported by its status as a Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization.
The certifications guarantee international standards of safety and compliance to both external and internal clients. To overcome the industry issues including the existence of long lead times on spare parts, LLA deploys proactive demand planning and inventory policies, sometimes investing capital reserves to purchase supplies for up to a year to ensure supply continuity.
Aviation Excellence Through People & Partnerships
Another pillar of success of LLA has been its training division. The Layang Layang Flying Academy Sdn. Bhd. (LLFA) is recognized by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) that provides structured pilot training and technical courses with a structured model of aviation requirements set by the country and the rest of the world. Furthermore, the academy also organizes obligatory repeated training in the sphere of Dangerous Goods, Safety Management Systems, Crew Resource Management, Human Factors, and Air Legislation.
This balanced emphasis on pilot training and compulsory professional training ensures that Malaysia keeps developing its human assets in the aviation industry an area where professional manpower retention has been a major issue. By retaining senior engineers as mentors and investing in in-house training programs helps LLA with its own workforce pipeline, as well as the broader Malaysian aerospace ecosystem.
Among the main characteristics of the company is its status of a “mission partner” to national institutions. Its long-standing partnerships with the Ministry of Health through the Flying Doctor Services and Emergency Medical Services, as well as contracts with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for flight calibration and navigation safety, highlight its public service orientation.
To add further, its work with Royal Malaysia Police, Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Sarawak Forestry Department, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency shows the level of trust that it has gained in the most important arms of government. “Clients in Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, China and the Philippines have also sought our expertise making us a reliable partner beyond Malaysian borders”, highlights Hj. Johan.
In the skies above the Layang Layang Group, our aircraft are more than machines, they embody courage, compassion, and a profound calling to save lives, as we don’t fly for a living; we fly for life itself
Sustaining Growth Through Innovation & Safety
Innovation has been instrumental in sustaining the company’s momentum. It is also in the progress of setting up the first local piston engine overhaul workshop in Malaysia, allowing regional clients to be less reliant on other workshops abroad, as well as cut down on turnaround time.
The company is also looking into electric aircraft technology, especially in the areas of air taxis and flight training, where less polluting, cost-effective alternatives are gaining popularity.
Furthermore, the company is upgrading its enterprise resource planning systems to streamline maintenance and procurement practices and considers artificial intelligence as a solution to pilot training and market intelligence.
Its excellence has been recognized constantly. In 2018 and 2019, LLA won the Sabah Industrial Excellence Awards. In 2023, it won the Corporate Excellence Awards in Aerospace at LIMA 2023, and in the same year it also won the Shanghai International Prestige Business Awards.
Such awards not only demonstrate its operational capabilities but also its contribution to the development of the national aerospace sector. Its philosophy of safety, reinforced by advanced tracking systems such as Spidertracks and a robust Safety Management System, ensures that it meets the highest benchmarks of reliability.
A Vision Beyond Boundaries
In the future, the goals of LLA are much bigger than its existing footprint. The company projects itself as the leading operator in both the Malaysian fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft, as well as venturing into medical tourism with the introduction of a pressurized, high-altitude medevac aircraft, which is designed to transport international patients.
It seeks to diversify its maintenance services to include a comprehensive engine and component overhauls, achieve leadership in the realm of green aviation by embracing electric aircraft, and gain a center of high-level pilot training including specialized training for Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) and aerobatic training.
In addition, the company plans to display the aviation potential of Malaysia in international air shows and races to display the country as a reference point of domestic expertise on the global map.
Layang Layang Aerospace is not a story of traditional aviation business but rather of connecting people, places and possibilities in what are the most geographically complicated regions in Southeast Asia. The path it took as a small-scale maintenance company to the multi-service aviation hub depicts how determination, creativity and dedication to the service of the masses can rewrite the aviation history of a country.
With one foot step closer on its path to become the most comprehensive aviation hub of the Southeast, LLA still remains to uphold the philosophy that aviation is not simply a way to fly, but rather a means to sustain lives and a vessel that serves to connect communities and advance regional development.
