The Philippines, an archipelago blessed with vast marine resources, has become a fertile ground for sustainable innovation, especially in industries that draw from the ocean’s natural bounty. Among these, the carrageenan sector stands out as a shining example of how Filipino companies are transforming traditional practices into eco-conscious enterprises.
Carrageenan, derived from locally abundant seaweed, is not only a key ingredient in global food and health products but also a symbol of how nature and technology can coexist sustainably. Filipino companies, such as W Hydrocolloids, are leading this transformation by adopting renewable energy sources like geothermal and solar power, investing in sustainable seaweed farming, and ensuring that suppliers adhere to strict environmental and ethical standards.
W Hydrocolloids, Inc. was founded by Wee Lee Hiong, whose entrepreneurial spirit began soon after college. “Discovering that seaweed, which thrives in the Philippines, could be processed into carrageenan, a natural ingredient widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, and health products, Wee saw immense potential.
He collaborated with experts and established what would grow into W Hydrocolloids”, shares Jhannice Fababaer, Plant Manager, W Hydrocolloids. From modest trading beginnings, the company expanded into a global enterprise, sharing the rich bounty of the ocean with customers across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and beyond.
Empowering Progress through Sustainability
Guided by core values that align closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the International Labor Organization’s Core Conventions, W Hydrocolloids fosters a holistic approach to sustainability.
The company fosters a respectful, inclusive, and safe workplace while actively engaging in community initiatives and adhering to responsible sourcing practices. These principles not only strengthen its operations within the Philippines, but also extend to its global impact on the food system.
W Hydrocolloids distinguishes itself from other sustainable companies through its deep-rooted dedication to innovation, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. The company prioritizes energy efficiency by integrating renewable energy sources into its manufacturing operations. Its strong in-house research and development (R&D) team continuously refines and enhances ingredients to meet the evolving needs of customers across the food, feed, and health and nutrition industries.
“We are driving sustainability through innovation, by transitioning to renewable energy sources such as geothermal and solar, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. We also empower local seaweed farmers through our partnership with the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, helping them boost productivity while protecting our marine ecosystems”, asserts Jhannice.
Adapting to Global Trends
W Hydrocolloids continues to thrive by embracing key global trends that shape today’s sustainability landscape, particularly financial and strategic innovation, and environmental and social compliance. Recognizing the growing global demand for clean energy, the company has significantly enhanced its energy efficiency by sourcing approximately 85 percent of its electricity from geothermal energy and the remaining 15 percent from solar power. This shift has greatly reduced dependence on fossil fuels and strengthened its commitment to renewable energy.
In addressing environmental challenges such as climate change and resource depletion, the company actively monitors its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under Scopes 1 and 2, and is currently working to include Scope 3 reporting in alignment with GHG Protocol standards. The company also utilizes steam-driven mechanical dryers powered by biomass fuel, producing biogenic CO₂ that does not contribute to Scope 1 emissions, further minimizing its carbon footprint.
We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and producing carrageenan responsibly to help safeguard the environment for the future
Beyond environmental responsibility, W Hydrocolloids upholds strong social compliance standards. It is an active member of SEDEX, where it is assessed under four pillars, including labor and human rights, health and safety, business ethics, and environmental management. Additionally, the company undergoes evaluation by EcoVadis, receiving performance ratings across environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Through these initiatives, it not only aligns with current sustainability trends but also demonstrates leadership in integrating responsible practices into every facet of its operations.
The Way Ahead
Looking ahead, W Hydrocolloids envisions becoming a globally recognized leader in the carrageenan industry by continuously pursuing innovation and sustainable growth. The company aims to expand into new markets and strengthen its competitive position through strategic product differentiation and strong brand development. "Our goal is to make every product responsibly by supporting climate action, promoting sustainable use, and using clean energy. We aim to reduce our carbon footprint and make carrageenan that helps protect the environment for the future”, concludes Jhannice.
