Samsung Electronics has been ranked the most competitive Korean company in AI, according to a new report by CEO Score.
The study assessed firms based on patent registrations, academic output, citations, and AI workforce recruitment. Samsung led domestically, followed by Naver for its strong research publications and citations, and LG Group for patent activity. However, despite their local dominance, Korean firms trail significantly behind global tech leaders in AI-related research publications. Alphabet (Google) topped the global list with 820 papers in the top three AI journals, followed by Microsoft (414) and Meta (385). In contrast, Samsung ranked 12th globally with 59 publications, while Naver and LG placed 30th and 40th respectively.
Key Highlights
The findings highlight a contrast in strategy. Samsung excels in patent strength and manufacturing breakthroughs but shows relatively weaker performance in academic publishing. This reflects its long-standing focus on product innovation rather than theoretical research—a pattern dating back to the 1990s when it pioneered the world’s first 256-mega DRAM semiconductor.
Historically, Samsung gained expertise through joint ventures, vertical integration, and R&D investment in tangible products, prioritizing practical applications over academic validation.

By comparison, platform-based firms like Google rely on academic credibility to attract AI talent and validate their platforms, while Samsung’s approach remains hardware-centric and patent-driven. The contrast is also evident in market value: Samsung’s $290 billion capitalization trails Apple’s $3.54 trillion, underscoring how markets reward software and platform-led AI strategies more than hardware-focused ones.
