Tencent has recruited Yao Shunyu, an accomplished AI researcher who most recently worked at OpenAI, in a move that underscores the global race for artificial intelligence talent.
Yao will focus on integrating AI into Tencent’s vast ecosystem of services. A graduate of Tsinghua University with a PhD from Princeton, Yao has held positions at Google and Princeton University and authored around 10 papers on AI agents.
Chinese media reported that Yao’s pay package could exceed 100 million yuan (US$14 million), although Tencent dismissed parts of this reporting as rumor without clarifying specifics. Such a compensation package would signal the escalating competition for elite AI talent.
Key Highlights
This move aligns with a wider industry trend where companies like Meta, Google, and Microsoft offer massive signing bonuses and salaries to secure leading researchers, treating them as strategic assets rather than ordinary hires. Average machine learning engineer salaries in the US hover around $175,000, highlighting the premium placed on top-tier researchers like Yao.
Yao’s hiring is also strategically significant for China’s AI ambitions. Studies show that 31 percent of AI leaders have moved from the US to China, compared to just 5 percent making the reverse move. With the US holding 42 percent of global AI executive talent and China 25 percent, each high-profile recruitment contributes to narrowing the gap.
