Companies from Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam have signed a new agreement toward regional energy integration to export clean electricity across Southeast Asia, fastening the realization of the ASEAN Power Grid.
The deal brings together two major energy unions, the MY Energy Consortium, a partnership between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) of Malaysia, and a Vietnam-Singapore association including PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), part of Petrovietnam, and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries.
Under the newly signed Joint Development Agreement, renewable energy generated in Vietnam will be transmitted through a subsea power cable to Malaysia and Singapore, supported by the Peninsular Malaysia National Grid. The project also considers future integration of energy storage and additional renewable power capacity to confirm a consistent supply.
Leaders of MY Energy Consortium highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative. Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, CEO of TNB, and Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, CEO of PETRONAS, said, “Malaysia is proud to play a central role in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid vision, which strengthens regional energy security and promotes Malaysia as a power transit hub.”

Vietnam, which has recognized offshore wind energy as a national development priority, views the partnership as an entry to economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development, while strengthening ASEAN’s commitment to a low-carbon future.
Singapore, a main consumer and facilitator in the partnership, targets to import up to 6 gigawatts of low-carbon electricity by 2035. Group CEO of Sembcorp Industries stated, “This agreement showcases Singapore’s pivotal role in enabling cross-border green power trade and supporting national decarbonisation goals,” said Wong Kim Yin,
The collaboration marks a significant milestone in Southeast Asia’s clean energy transition, supporting energy infrastructure and policy drives across borders for a resilient, integrated, and sustainable energy future to the region.
